Blues and BBQ

A song by Eddie Cochran states, “There ain’t no cure for the summertime blues.” But, a treatment for your illness is on the horizon.

A favorite remedy for this predicament is food. It always has been, and will be, a source of happiness for us. The allure of chow has never failed to bring family and friends together. Grilling in the summer is always the center of attention at these events. A great way to spend time outdoors is eating then, indulging in a luscious dessert.

Music sure brings people together. Blues and BBQ will be on the table for an upcoming event that is being held in Waconia, Minn. on Saturday, July 17.

As a Kansas City BBQ Society Judge, summer is the perfect time for me to sit down to a big rack of babies and dig in.

Just yesterday, a phone call was the ticket to satisfy my craving for BBQ.
“I’ve heard you love BBQ?” Jerry, the event coordinator, stated.

My mind was racing, and then I replied. “Yes, I do!” My salivary gland kicked into overdrive.

Then, the conversation turned to the important stuff. “What’s your favorite food to grill?” Jerry asked.

“My favorite is baby back ribs.” I told him. “They have to be smothered in a sweet and zesty sauce.”

That got his attention.

This conversation and camaraderie was all I needed to make my way to “whole hog heaven.”

“At the event there will be, Big Walt Schmidt of Bayfront Blues.” Jerry said. “He’s a very well-known blues guy. It should draw quite a crowd.”

This upcoming event will showcase twenty cookers with their own formula to entice and enthrall the judges who will decide the “Best in ribs” category. They in turn will try to knock out last year’s first place champion.

Here’s hoping for a successful event. It will be great when you consider that eating a meal where no utensils are required, makes for a successful celebration.
