Weekend roars

Weekend roars

The buzz, buzz, buzz began early on a sunny, Sunday morning. The local neighborhood was not even awake yet. But, the weekend warriors were already gassed up and ready to go. These motivated militants take on their yard chores like a combatant. They are provoked to complete these tasks by the constant scream coming from their yard.

But some of us are lazy, and are still snoozing in our comfortable beds. Some are trying to wake up quietly after a fun-filled Saturday night. All we really want is quiet on the weekend.

As we grab our cup of coffee and some reading material we try to settle in outside and relax on our porch. In the distance we hear an annoying distraction. Then, we hear the engine howl of a power machine. After twenty minutes of this irritating sound, our hearing starts to decline, with the sound of our neighbor’s weed-whacker. This clatter is familiar and sounds like a Paul Bunyan size mosquito.

This implement should not be confused with a leaf blower. That’s another column all together, and another annoying sound, for another time.

Homeowners seem to think that this gizmo will help them in the upkeep of their parcel. But, do they really accomplish anything?

By blowing the debris off their sidewalks, driveway and patio, it eventually lands in another location. Does it make any sense to do this chore knowing full well that the waste will need to be moved after the dust has settled in this new spot?

I believe this contraption is usually used by men. We women know better and instead just pull out the weeds by hand.

After this job has been completed, a hushed atmosphere is everywhere.

  1. Great story, Joanie. Weekend warriors, indeed.

I’m lucky, our HOA has scheduled our lawn maintenance for Tues. If I’m lucky I’m at work. BTW, our week whacker person is female. And, I ran one of those heavy gadgets when I worked in the park. But at home, I bend over and pull the weed, then try to find something to help me straighten up.
