No one should look like a pretzel at 6 a.m. But, when a girlfriend makes a pact with you to start an exercise routine, you have to accept the challenge.

Recently, I started yoga. Pricilla’s Yoga class is on the tube on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings. The first session was scary. I asked myself, “What if it hurts?”

There are many reasons people put off exercise. We think to ourselves, “It’s too hard, gas is too high, and I don’t need to.”

But consider this, we could sit in the comfort of our empty living room, there would be no distractions, or family members watching us, in anguish, contorting our bodies.

The first time we try this routine with the bending and stretching will be quite a challenge. Pricilla has a quiet demeanor. As an instructor she reminds us to “not” overdue it, and to breathe in and exhale slowly.

Did you ever think we needed to be reminded of this simple breathing function?

This 30-minute show reminds the viewing audience to gently stretch your torso. This starts out with simple maneuvers that contort your body into a frog like pose. This is where gratitude comes in that no one is around to view this stance.

This amphibian position is a problem for many. The next morning our achy muscles remind us of our insanity. Many of our tissues scream at us.

Years ago fitness instructors told us, “Work through the pain.”

We did.

A few weeks later, after our joints and muscles have healed, we try to resume our workout-again. When we exercise, we get a jolt of energy. But, many times these bodily sensations are new to us, so we make the most of it.

We should remember that the last time we over did it…we paid the price.

We should never attempt yoga early in the morning, mow the grass, rake the yard, garden, and then shop. We often enjoy this surge of energy until the next morning.

Then our bodies shout at us, “What the heck were you thinking?”

    • Heidi, thanks! I actually had a guy friend ask me, “How’s it going with yoga?” I told him, “Do I look like I enjoy being a pretzel?” He looked stunned at that comment.

  1. My favourite saying after a good qorkiot of any type, whether I’m teaching it, taking it, or otherwise doing something like building a fence, mowing the lawn, or listening to complaints from a client is, “As usual, my endorphines are nowhere to be found.”

  2. That’s why I do “Sweatin to the Oldies”. There’s people on there fatter than me, older than me, and taller than me.! And, I don’t hurt the next day. Did you continue with yoga? I’ve thought about trying it but I’m afraid I’d get into one of those positions and not be able to get out.
